30 Tips To Help You Start A Business From Scratch

I can’t think of a single time in my adult life when I didn’t want to be an entrepreneur. Even while I had a full time job, I was always designing a plan in my mind for a life that allowed me more control of my time. That’s why about ten years ago, while I still had a 9 to 5 role, I started my own business.

With no formal training and a lot of research, trial and error, and sleepless nights, I learned how to set up a business,  create an online presence, connect with customers, finalize a sale, and hire contracted teammates.  Everything I learned all those years ago is what makes this time of my life living abroad and being a digital creator so much easier.

Here are 30 tips to help you start a business from scratch.

Tip #1: Make the Time

Nobody can tell you how to spend your time, and each of us has different commitments and constraints. This is true AND you know deep down when you’re laser-focused on a task versus when you’re putting things on the back burner. When you're passionate about something, time flies. When you don't want to do something, it feels like time slows down. When you start a business, there are some parts that will excite you and others that you'll just want to roll your eyes and stop. And yes you could stop. But what if you don't? How much more progress would you have if you just did one little thing each day towards reaching your goals? I'd rather you spend 30 minutes a day for 6 months being hyper focused on one small task than trying to do a million things in 1 hour. Either way you've got to make the time for the thing you say you want to build. You have to keep working at it until it becomes muscle memory where even on days you don't want to, you still make the time. Get out of the habit of saying, "I can't find the time," and instead realize the truth and say, "I need to make the time."

Tip #2: Become a student (Again, And Again, And Again)

In my 15 years as an educator working with children and adults, I've come across all types of students. I can tell you from experience the most challenging student to work with is one who thinks they know everything. I've been on my entrepreneurial journey for over 10 years and have had to learn from many other people in order to get where I am today. Starting a business can be simple (especially if you have really great teachers) but it is not easy. Over the last decade I've had to learn how to: build a website, optimize for SEO so people actually get to the website, launch Facebook, Instagram and Google Ads, get an LLC, design webinars, determine which software programs are best for small businesses, and the list goes on. And guess what? The learning never stops. You have to be open to investing in your personal growth if you ever want to have a successful business.

Tip # 3: Build From Inspiration Not Desperation

When you are under a lot of stress, it's hard to be creative. You're thinking about how you're going to pay your bills so it's not likely your brain has much room to dream up fresh ideas for you to explore. There are some of you who will say you work better under pressure. That may be true, but it isn't the best environment when you're trying to be innovative. When I look back at times I was trying to build a business, I was the most productive when I wasn't feeling desperate. When you're desperate, your mind is focused on scarcity, usually lack of time or money. But when you build from inspiration, you're working towards your goals because you feel called to do so. I certainly feel the difference. When you work from inspiration, ideas flow better and the energy towards your work is much more positive. And the best part is, the path towards reaching your goals becomes clearer.

Tip #4: Understand Your Money Mindset

I've known I wanted to be an entrepreneur since I was in college. I've always loved the idea of creating something that lasts beyond me and helping my community so that we all get to live our best life. I also value financial stability. Money matters to me because it is the means by which I can live debt-free, support my family, friends, and community, travel, and live a healthy, more carefree lifestyle. Why does money matter to you?  And more importantly, what did your childhood teach you about money, and how is that impacting your progress with building your business? Too often, people have great ideas but don’t move their business forward because deep down they have beliefs about money that don’t align with becoming a successful business owner. It’s important you take time to reflect on your money mindset when you are at the beginning stages of starting your business.

Tip #5: Dream Big, Change Small

A new idea comes to my mind every single day. I’ll be working on one thing and then 22 other ideas pop in my head. Has that ever happened to you? Maybe you’re a dreamer like me, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But it becomes a problem when you're starting a business and have this grand idea in your head and don't start to see things happening like you want as quickly as you want. The best way to keep your dream alive is by taking small steps towards it each day and rewarding yourself along the way.

Tip #6: Do Your Research

Frustration happens when you dive in head first without having enough information. It’s important to talk to people who are similar to your ideal clients. Be aware of other people doing something similar to what you want to do and see what you can learn from them. Above all, be clear about what problem you're solving for people and how you are helping them because whatever product or service you offer should be to help someone in some way.

Tip # 7: Pick Your Favorite Social Media Platform And Build There

My friend brought up Periscope the other day and I laughed so hard! Do you remember that site? You may not, but there are people you follow on Instagram today who became popular on Periscope. Look, we will never know what the next new and shiny social media platform will be, so trying to keep up with all of them is a waste of your time. And trying to avoid all of them isn't a smart move either. Choose the one you like the most and start there.

Tip # 8: Decide What You’re Willing To Pay For Versus Do Yourself

In Tip #2 I shared a list of things you have to do when starting a business. It can be very time consuming and frustrating to try and tackle everything on your own. There will come a time when you'll have to decide what parts of your business you prefer to outsource for someone else to handle. That's actually a great problem to have because it means your business is growing and you can no longer do everything yourself.

Tip #9: Set Up Your Basics:

When you are at the very beginning stages of starting your business, your needs are different from someone who has been an entrepreneur for a while. As your business grows, a different set up structure is required. But to get you up and running and be in the clear for tax time, make sure you have the following:

  1. DBA - DBA stands for "doing business as" and allows you to conduct business under your business name instead of your actual name. Having a DBA allows you to get an employer identification number (EIN) which then allows you to get a business banking account. Each state has their own requirements for how you get your DBA so be sure to check your state comptroller's website or with your country clerk.

  2. Business Bank account - This will help you keep your personal and business money separate, make tax time less stressful, and make you appear more professional to potential customers.

  3. Business mailing address - You'll need an address for your DBA filing and to open a business bank account. It's safer to avoid using your personal mailing address. Instead, opt for a P.O. Box or virtual mailing address. There are other steps you'll need to set up your business. Tip  #10: Learn The Whole Business

When you're just getting started you'll need to learn something about all parts of your business. Most people share their journey of starting a business after they've made it, so it always looks like the process was easier than it actually was. By the time you hear about them, they've got a building and employees. But people like you and me start at the very beginning with nothing more than an idea and a dream to see it turn into reality. That means we've got to get ready to roll up our sleeves and learn about all parts of the business. When you first start you're going to be the assistant, social media creator, blogger, accountant, err'thang lol. Luckily, there are many platforms, even FREE platforms that can help you.

Tip # 11: Be Yourself

I know you hear this all the time but that's because it's so true AND because most people don't do it. If you're just starting a business and you try to keep up with every trend or try to mimic what you see on other people's social media pages, you will feel overwhelmed. Unless your business is about being trendy, you don't need that to be successful. You just need to be yourself. The story you're sharing and the way you're helping people will resonate with someone. And then someone else. And then another. And before you know it, you'll look up and you'll be connecting with people in ways you never thought possible. I know I wasted a lot of years on social media letting imposter Syndrome stop me from posting how I want. And now the more I open myself up and just be me, the more fun I have on social media. I am not trying to impress anyone or be something I am not. I am just trying to share information and if someone likes it, then I've made a new connection and that's wonderful. And if someone doesn't like it they'll move on to the next post. Just be you.

Tip #12: Everyone Is Not Your Audience

Let's be honest. If you started a social media account for your business you aren't just talking to your friends anymore. You hope that someone will see your offering then like you and your product or service enough to want to make a purchase. You already know everyone in the world won't want what you have to offer because you don't like everything you see. In my opinion, one of the biggest challenges when starting a business is getting clear about who your audience really is. This part takes time and you may not always get it right on the first try. Too often, people think more about the thing they are selling than the people they are trying to sell the thing to, and that's a big no-no. Once you get super clear on who your audience is, everything else will start to make more sense.

Tip #13: Your Reason Has To Be More Than Just Money

No one goes into business not wanting it to be profitable, but making money shouldn't be the only reason you start a business. Entrepreneurship is a thrilling roller coaster ride where passion fuels innovation. It's about creating a lasting impact, making dreams come true, and shaping a better tomorrow. Starting a business isn't just about making money, it's about chasing your purpose with unwavering determination. Let's inspire each other to redefine success and make a difference that truly matters.

Tip #14: Keep Your Vision In Plain Sight

The road to success can be a bit bumpy, but with focus and determination, you can stay on course to achieving your dream of starting a business. Hang your vision where you can see it every day and never give up.

Tip #15: Go For Progress, Not Perfection

Entrepreneurship is a journey, and it's not about perfection but progress. Starting your own business may seem intimidating, but you’ve already taken a leap by making the decision to be your own boss. Instead of waiting for the perfect moment (hint hint: it doesn’t exist), embrace the challenges, learn from failures, and celebrate every small victory along the way. Remember, success comes to those who dare not those who wait.

Tip #16 Keep The What; Be Ok With Changing The How

As you dive into this exciting new chapter of your business journey, be committed to keeping your vision intact while exploring innovative ways to make your dream a reality.  Don't be like Blockbuster and get so stuck in your ways that you're unable to shift with the times. You can keep your vision and shift the path you take to reach your goals.

Tip #17: Get A Facebook Pixel

You may think a Facebook/Meta Business Pixel is only for the techy side of business, but in reality, it is a key tool for driving sales. If you're a new business and you already have a website, you need to get your Facebook/Meta Business pixel as soon as possible. Here's why the pixel is important: Ever wondered how successful businesses seem to know exactly what you're looking for? Well, it's all thanks to the Facebook Pixel!  This tool helps you track and target your website visitors, so you can deliver personalized ads and experiences that'll help you connect with your audience. I took an online course that helped me deeply understand social media marketing, and I see how it’s helped my new business grow.

Tip #18: Just Talk To One Person

Unlocking the secret to reaching your audience lies in talking to one person at a time. It's like having a heart-to-heart conversation that resonates with the masses. Sometimes, we get so caught up in trying to reach a large audience that we forget the power of simply connecting with one person. This also relieves pressure you put on yourself to try and connect with everyone. Your business idea won’t be for everybody, but it will be for somebody. You’ve created something that will solve their problem, so talk to them and let them know how you can help.

Tip #19: Comparison Kills Creativity

Comparison suffocates creativity.  Each of us is on a unique path filled with boundless potential. Embrace your individuality, and don't let the achievements of others overshadow your remarkable journey. Embrace your own timeline, and remember greatness takes time to craft. Focus on yourself, nurture your talents, and watch your creativity soar. Comparison fades when you celebrate your individual journey.

Tip #20: Be Careful Who You Share Your Dreams With

Your dreams are fragile seeds of possibility, delicate and precious. Be mindful of those you entrust with them. Even people with good intentions often say things out of their own fears that can make you start to doubt your ideas. And then there are people who smile at you but don't actually want you to succeed. Surround yourself with people who lift you higher and fuel your passion. Seek out those who believe in your dreams as fiercely as you do, who nurture and empower you to pursue the extraordinary. Remember, your dreams are sacred. Protect them from the negative energy and unsolicited opinions that may hinder your growth. Choose wisely because the right confidants will uplift your spirits, ignite your creativity, and walk alongside you on the path to realizing your dreams.

Tip #21: Whatever You’re Charging For Your Service, Charge More

Don't underestimate the value of your services and expertise. People aren't just paying for what takes you an hour; they're investing in the culmination of years worth of knowledge and experience. Your talent has been refined through countless hours of learning, growth, and overcoming challenges. Respect the time and effort you've dedicated to mastering your craft. Embrace your worth and confidently set your prices. Clients are seeking the unique value that only you can provide. Step into your power and let your expertise shine. You've earned it.

Tip #22: Your Business Is Only As Big As The People Who Know About It

Your business's growth is directly tied to its visibility. The more people who know about it, the bigger it can become. That's why marketing is an absolute game-changer. Showcase your unique offerings, connect with your target market, and build a thriving community around your brand. Engage, spark interest, and demonstrate the remarkable value you bring. Invest in marketing to create a buzz, expand your reach, and elevate your brand. Let the world know about your business and unlock its incredible potential.

Tip #23: Use ChatGPT To Work Smart, Not Hard

Starting a business can be tricky, but ChatGPT is truly the gift that keeps on giving. It's like having a super smart friend who knows a lot about business. And when you're a solopreneur trying to figure everything out on your own, having a smart business friend is needed. ChatGPT can give you great ideas, helpful tips, and clever advice. It knows so much that it can save you time and make your work easier. You can use ChatGPT to learn about your customers and get creative ideas for your business. It's a virtual helper that can do lots of things for you. With ChatGPT, you can make better decisions and get answers to your questions quickly. It really is the secret weapon that can help make your business successful.

Tip #24: Ask For What You Want

When you have a business, it's important to ask for what you want. Don't be too shy to tell people about your awesome products and services. Let them know how amazing they are! Direct people to where they can go to make a purchase. Show them the way to your online store or physical shop. Make it easy for them to find and buy what you offer. Don't hold back! Be confident and proud of what you have to offer. Let your voice be heard and spread the word about your business. The more people know, the more customers you can get. So, ask, share, and guide people to make a purchase. Your business deserves to be seen and loved!

Tip #25: Never Stop Talking To Your People

It's important to never stop talking to your people, your audience and your potential customers. Why? Because people are busy scrolling social media all day long! To grab their attention and stand out, you need to be consistent in communicating with them. But how can you do that? By providing value and helping to solve their problems. Give them useful information, tips, or advice that can make their lives better. Be someone they can trust and rely on. When you consistently offer value, people will start to notice and appreciate you. They'll see that you genuinely care about them and their needs. That's how you build a strong connection with your potential customers. Think about all the people you follow on social media. You made a clear choice for why you wanted to follow them and it likely was because you found some value (information, entertainment, encouragement) in their posts. When you use social media for your business, you have to keep the conversation going, be consistent in your communication, and always focus on giving value.

Tip #26: There’s Enough Room For You To Win, Too

In the business world, there's enough room for everyone to succeed. So, don't worry about your competition! Instead, view them as an opportunity to learn and grow. The truth is, there might be others doing what you're doing, but that shouldn't stop you from starting your own business. Each person has their own style and personality that attracts different customers. Remember, there's someone out there who specifically needs to hear from you. Your voice and perspective are valuable, and you have something unique to offer. So, focus on your strengths, share your knowledge, and trust that there's a place for you in the business world. Embrace your journey and let your authentic self shine! Or as I like to say, do you boo!

Tip #27 Got Your Business Name? Then Go Get Your Domain Name

Once you've secured your business name, it's important to also get your domain name. But why is it necessary? Having a domain name gives your business an online address. It's like having your own special spot on the internet where people can find you easily. By getting your domain name, you make it simple for customers to visit your website. They can type your domain name into their web browser, and voila, they're instantly connected to your online presence! Having a domain name also adds professionalism to your business. It shows that you're serious about what you do and that you're ready to make a mark in the digital world. So, don't forget to secure your domain name after securing your business name. It's a smart move that will help your business thrive in the online realm!

Tip #28 Even When They Stop Cheering, Keep Going

When you start a business, family and friends may cheer for you with excitement. But as the entrepreneurial journey unfolds, their cheers may quiet down. That's okay. Remember, it's essential to stay grounded in your vision and why you wanted to start a business in the first place. Don't let the silence discourage you. Even when others stop cheering, keep reaching for your goals. Celebrate your own progress and reward yourself at each milestone you achieve. Clap for yourself, because you deserve it! The ups and downs are part of the journey, and your determination and perseverance will lead you to success. Stay focused, stay motivated, and keep pushing forward. Your business dreams are worth it!

Tip #29 Don’t Self-sabotage Your Success

When starting a business, you may face both highs and lows. It's important to remember not to self-sabotage your own success. Self-sabotage happens when we create obstacles or doubts that hold us back from achieving our goals. It's like tripping over our own feet instead of moving forward. Instead of letting self-doubt or fear get in your way, focus on the possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead. Believe in yourself and your abilities. Remind yourself of your passion and the reasons you started this business. Stay positive and keep pushing through the challenges. Every setback is a chance to learn and grow. Embrace the lessons and use them to become stronger and better. You have the power to create your own success. Don't let self-sabotage dim your light. I believe in you.

Tip # 30 Make Time To Rest

Starting a business requires hard work, but it's vital to make time for rest and relaxation. Why? Because your creativity flourishes when you're well-rested. When you're too stressed, it can hinder your ability to excel on your entrepreneurial journey. That's why finding balance is crucial. By taking breaks and allowing yourself to recharge, you replenish your energy and open the door to fresh ideas and innovative solutions. Remember, success isn't just about constant hustle; it's also about taking care of yourself. Resting and relaxing are essential ingredients for long-term success. So, prioritize self-care, make time for activities that bring you joy, and embrace the power of relaxation. Your business will thrive when you find harmony within yourself.
