How To Add More Fulfillment To Your Life

Growing up in the 80s and 90s when life felt more easygoing and relaxing and then adulting in today’s fast-paced world can do a number on your psyche and overall mental health. It’s a constant struggle between knowing life doesn’t have to be this hard (because it didn’t used to be) and having society try to force you into a very small and specific box. But you know there’s more out there. And that’s why you find yourself yearning for something more out of life.

And it’s not that you can’t play this role you’ve been playing. After all, you’re a go-getter. You take care of everything and everyone, excelling in your career and any other venture you decide to take on. Yet with all of your external accomplishments, deep down you feel a longing for something else. And truth be told, there are so many other ways you’d rather be spending your time other than working 40 plus hours every week.

Acknowledge Your Desire for Something Different

Often, it’s a feeling of stuckness. You’ve got a lot going for you, you know you’ve been blessed in life, but there’s this stuckness that keeps weighing you down.

The first step towards finding fulfillment is acknowledging you have a desire for more out of life. Your mind, body, soul, heart is screaming for something different, but you suppress those thoughts and continue with your same, daily routine even though it’s causing you distress. You don’t have to prioritize career success above everything else. True fulfillment comes from pursuing passions and embracing a holistic approach to life. In the same way you give your all to work and family and friends, you owe it to YOU to give to yourself.

Identify Your Passions

Discovering your passions is a crucial part of the journey towards a fulfilling life. Unfortunately though, too many people are unclear about what they’re passionate about. If that’s you, let’s explore strategies to identify your true passions, including reflection, self-assessment, and exploring new experiences.

Reflection and Self-Assessment

Take the time for self-reflection and introspection. Ask yourself the questions below and take notes on the immediate thought that pops in your mind. Don’t overthink this. Whatever answer immediately comes up is the one you want to write down.

  • What activities make me lose track of time and bring me joy?

  • What are my natural talents and strengths?

  • What are the topics or causes that deeply resonate with me?

  • What have been my most significant accomplishments and moments of pride?

  • What are the recurring themes or interests throughout my life?

By examining your experiences, interests, and personal history, you can start to identify patterns and uncover areas that spark your passion.

Try New Experiences

Stepping outside of your comfort zone and exploring new experiences can be incredibly eye-opening. Sign up for classes, workshops, or events that pique your interest. Whether it's painting, dancing, writing, or learning a new language, exposing yourself to new activities can help you discover hidden passions and talents you were previously unaware of.

Explore Childhood Hobbies and Interests

Think back to your childhood and recall the activities and hobbies that brought you immense joy. Revisiting those interests can reignite the passion you once had and provide valuable clues about your current passions. Whether it's playing a musical instrument, gardening, or engaging in sports, reconnecting with your childhood pastimes can be a powerful source of inspiration.

Pay Attention to What Energizes You

Take note of the activities or tasks that energize and excite you, even outside of work. Pay attention to the moments when you feel fully engaged, enthusiastic, and in flow. What are the things you get so excited about that you forget to check your cell phone? These moments can indicate areas of genuine passion and provide insight into the activities that align with your authentic self.

Conclusion

Remember that discovering your passions is a personal and ongoing process. Be patient with yourself, and don't be afraid to explore different avenues. Embrace curiosity, allow yourself to be open to new experiences, and trust that your passions will reveal themselves in due time. Your journey of self-discovery will help you uncover the passions that will ignite your soul and guide you towards a more fulfilling life.
