Move Out Of Your Own Way
Diary Entry: June 5, 2023
When you start something- a new relationship, a new job, a new business- you don’t really know what’s going to happen. But unfortunately what we usually do is act as though we know the outcome because we use our past experiences to judge our present and future behaviors.
That’s certainly what I’ve done. Especially when it comes to my entrepreneurial journey. Ever since I can remember, I wanted to create something and put it out to share with the world yet each time I’d get to the point where my idea was taking off or where I was starting to see income, I’d freeze. I didn’t know it then, but having this adult gap year has given me a lot of time to reflect. The real reason I wasn’t thriving in my previous ventures is because I was self-sabotaging.
The book I’m currently reading titled You Are The Mountain said it best:
There is nothing holding you back in life more than yourself.
All I had to do was look in the mirror to find out who to blame for my lack of consistency towards my own dreams. It was never about lack of knowledge because I had read the books, taken the courses, talked to mentors. It was never about the lack of skill because even if for a little while, I applied what I learned.
It was about irrational fear. Our brains are wired to keep us safe which really translates into keeping us comfortable. So anytime we are faced with something new, as soon as we reach the bounds of our comfort zone, our brain uses thought to redirect us back to what we already know how to do. And even though I know this, I’m not immune to the effects.
So every day I have to make space for my irrational fears to say what they need to say and then I counter those fears with truth. The truth is I am on a new life journey and I need to take this one day at a time. The more I do one little task each day, the more the feeling of fear and newness will dissipate and in its place new habits form.
Sometimes you have to jump in, all the way in, to find out if you’re going to make it. If you stay in your comfort zone, you’ll stay where you’ve always felt safe. And where you’ve felt safe is doing what you’ve always done.
And that’s just not where I want to be.
This is a painful truth but one that you must know in order to reach your full potential.
